Diabetes Management

Research evidence confirms the existence of close links between positive psychological adjustment and well being and good management of diabetes. The development of psychosocial support, therefore, is essential and should be built into routine care from the onset. It is important to note that individuals vary widely in their psychological responses to events. Although they share some commonalities, each person’s experience is unique The diagnosis of diabetes can have a tremendous emotional impact on the person diagnosed and their family.

Comprehensive care for prevention of diabetes:

  2. Treatment of diabetes through updated care.

Footcare in Diabetes

High blood sugar levels over time can cause nerve damage and circulation problems. These problems can cause or contribute to foot problems. Left unnoticed or untreated, sores, ingrown toenails, and other problems can lead to infection. Poor circulation makes healing an infection difficult.

Untreatable infections may require amputations. While your ulcers heal, stay off your feet and follow your treatment plan. Diabetic foot ulcers can take several weeks to heal. Ulcers may take longer to heal if your blood sugar is high and if constant pressure is applied to the ulcer.

Gestational Diabetes

Gestational Diabetes occurs in pregnant women. One may develop gestational diabetes for the first time during pregnancy or may have a mild undiagnosed case of diabetes that worsens during pregnancy.Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a condition of abnormally raised blood sugar levels that may occur in the second part of the pregnancy and blood sugar levels normalizes once the baby is born.High blood sugar is caused when the mother cannot produce enough insulin (a pregnant woman’s insulin needs are two to three times that of normal). Some women with gestational diabetes may need no treatment, some need a strict diet and others may need insulin injections.

Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune condition in which the immune system is activated to destroy the cells in the pancreas which produce insulin. We do not know what causes this auto-immune reaction. Type 1 diabetes is not linked to modifiable lifestyle factors. There is no cure and it cannot be prevented.

Type 1 diabetes, once known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin. Insulin is a hormone needed to allow sugar (glucose) to enter cells to produce energy.

Type 2 Diabetes

In type 2 diabetes, the body either doesn’t produce enough insulin, or it resists insulin.

Symptoms:

  1. increased thirst,
  2. frequent urination,
  3. hunger,
  4. fatigue and blurred vision.

In some cases, there may be no symptoms.

Treatments- diet, exercise, medication and insulin therapy.

Which signs and symptoms are unique to women with diabetes?

Many Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes symptoms in women are the same as those in men; however, there are some symptoms and complications of diabetes unique to women.

Vaginal itching and pain as well as vaginal and oral yeast infections: An overgrowth of Candida albicans fungus can cause vaginal yeast infections and oral yeast infections (oral thrush).
